I have yet to meet a person that prefers to be uncomfortable.
According to Merriam Webster comfortable is defined as: · a : affording or enjoying contentment and security <a comfortable income> b : affording or enjoying physical comfort <a comfortable chair> <was too comfortable to move> · 2 a : free from vexation or doubt <comfortable assumptions> b : free from stress or tension <a comfortable routine> I’d like to focus on definition 2B, or rather it’s example: A comfortable routine. I haven’t updated my phone’s operating system for the past 2 years. Supposedly, new updates have a habit of slowing down old phones in an effort to get us to buy new ones. And I don’t personally see a need relearn a few things about something that I use just about every day. It’s fine the way it is. I’m comfortable with it. In this particular case, my comfort is to my own potential detriment. I’m “missing out” on some features because I’m content with the phone as it is now. That can translate over to a lot of things. To everyone who stays inside all day they miss out on some of the cool stuff that’s outside. And vise versa. To everybody who doesn’t like talking to people, (you’re completely justified), but, you miss out on the occasional decent human being that happens to be in your vicinity. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be comfortable and secure. The problem comes in where we place that baseline for being comfortable. Let me explain. I’m overweight It’s objectively bad for your health to be overweight. And I keep seeing ads and movements saying "be comfortable with who you are". I get the spirit of that statement. Don’t hate yourself, you’re different from other people, being different is part of being alive. I agree with that. But. Being overweight is a problem. It can take years off your life. But here we are, promoting the idea that it’s ok to be fat. Don, are you fat shaming? I’ll tell twitter if you are. Absolutely not. If you are satisfied with yourself, hold on to that feeling and don’t let it go. You have something that so many people will never get. That being said, too many of us are boxing ourselves in for our comfort. Now I know what you’re thinking. Don, why on earth should I change? You need to answer that question for yourself. I’m trying to lose weight because there’s a history of diabetes and heart attacks in my family. I try to listen to opinions that aren’t my own to see where other people are coming from. I solicit feedback on the stuff I write because I want to get better at writing. Now reader, I’d like to call you to action. Look at yourself. Think about who you are. Think about the person you want to be. Think about what kind of changes you’d need to make to become that person. If you find it to be a good investment of your time then go for it. If not then live. Comfortably.
